Baima Tunnel is the longest road tunnel under construction in Sichuan Province, with a total length of 13,013 metres, and construction started in April 2016. The construction crosses a number of fault zones, featuring complex geological conditions, transport disruption and high construction safety risks. During construction, it was difficult for 4G/5G signals to cover the large number of tunnels in the project, so SCLab provided a customised solution to achieve site intelligence.

During the construction process of this tunnel, the deployment of wireless base station involves the following two aspects of the deployment requirements constraints:
(1) Deployment distance: In order to ensure the performance of self-organised network while taking into account the economic requirements, the test distance of 400 m still cannot meet the distance requirements of the wireless base station deployment scheme in real engineering scenarios.
(2) Deployment method: To avoid interfering with the passage of heavy machinery and vehicles, as well as to ensure the stability of the wireless base station installation, the wireless base station can not be installed on a tripod at a certain distance from the wall of the tunnel. The wireless base station were fixed on the tunnel wall, and the tunnel wall would absorb the wireless signals, which led to a reduction in the bandwidth of the self-organising network.
Based on the above two aspects of the deployment requirements, the key point of this customised solution is to optimise the deployment distance and method of the wireless base station in real engineering construction scenarios as much as possible, by reducing the influence of factors such as mechanical obstruction, tunnel curvature, dusty environment and so on.
Landlink wireless base station No. 1 is located at the tunnel wall at the tunnel entrance, which is at the 0-metre position; base station No. 2 is located at the 1,000-metre position; base station No. 3 is located at the 2,000-metre position; the distance between base stations No. 1 and No. 2, and between base stations No. 2 and No. 3, is 1,000 metres.
There is a 200-metre curved curved tunnel section within the 0-metre to 1,000-metre interval where Base Station No. 1 and Base Station No. 2 are located; there is less shelter within the 1,000-metre to 2,000-metre interval where Base Station No. 2 and Base Station No. 3 are located.

Project Outcome

1. This Landlink network deployment solution has been field-tested for long transmission distances and high network signal stability. The bandwidth between the test computer and the three base stations is up to 140 Mbps. The latency of the test computers and the entire link to transmit small packets (32 Byte) ranged from 3ms-93ms, with an average latency of 37ms. The latency of the test computers and the entire link to transmit big packets (65500 Byte) ranged from 22ms-524ms, with an average latency of 154ms. Therefore, Landlink technology achieves full coverage of high-speed network signals in the extreme environment in the tunnel.

2. Landlink network guaranteed the data transmission capability of monitoring devices. The cameras can be transmitted in real time over the entire link and the camera rotation can be controlled in real time from the computer.

What types of devices are allowed to be interfaced to the Landlink network?
The wireless base station allows access to all devices that support the IP protocol, including cameras, gas detectors, road gates, face recognition machines, and so on. By interface type port, devices can be roughly classified into three categories: devices with one network cable connector and one power connector, devices with only one network cable connector, and devices with 485 connectors.
For devices with one network cable connector and one power connector, the power connector is connected to the common power system in the tunnel through a power adapter, while the network cable connector is connected to the body network port of the wireless base drill and the network port of the POE switch. For devices with only one network cable connector, the network cable connector can be accessed to the POE network port of the POE switch, or it can be accessed to the POE converter and then split into a network cable connector and a power connector.
